Are Plastics Truly Fantastic?

Plastics are an inevitable part of our lives. From the moment we wake up in the morning till we sleep at night, we use products which invariably have plastics. Why have plastics replaced conventional materials like metal, glass, ceramic or wood rapidly?

A product designer must have the choice of numerous materials if he has to be versatile. Plastics offer a range of mechanical properties inconceivable in any of the conventional materials.

Some plastics are hard, tough and wear resistant. Others are soft, elastic, strong and chemical resistant. There are plastics which have attractive looks.

All plastics without exception exhibit dimensional stability. This is the reason why plastics find applications in almost all industries from automobile to construction and pharmaceutical to agriculture!

To mass produce plastic components, we need tools called moulds. Manufacture a mould and hey voila! Millions of components are produced with unerring accuracy and repeatability!

The industry loves plastics because of its high productivity. This lowers the cost of components which means increased profits for companies.

The only complaint against plastics is its non-biodegradable nature. It does not decompose and it is difficult to destroy. However, recent developments in biodegradable plastics are encouraging and these new plastics will gradually replace the non-biodegradable plastics.

No material offers the wide range of properties and applications which plastics does. No wonder the industry is crazy about plastics.

Hence in conclusion, it is appropriate to say that ‘Plastics Are Truly Fantastic!’
